Hello Andy,

No problem ;-)

Would it be possible to translate the help into French ?

I'll begin to translate the FAQ, but I think, it would be useful for the non English speakers, to access to the help in French.

That is a daunting undertaking. And we have no tools to help with that as it is all held in standard text files. You will find them all in the help folder. You should be able to just change the extension of the files to your language code.

I should warn you that when version 5 ships – a long way off yet – a lot of the help text will change. A lot will go and much new help will need to be created.

I have actually started looking for a tool that would make it easier for both us to create the help but also for people to translate it should they want to. The current 'gettext' system is good but is probably not quite right for the task. If you or anyone else reading this has any knowledge of tools I could look into then that would be appreciated.

Hi there! I would be glad to help for the translation!

I first wanted to improve the actual translation files. Because there's any capital letters in the sentences so the aspect of the forums is a bit strange.

I tried to open the .po and .mo files. But I can only read the .po file. I'm on Mac and I don't know which software I could use to edit these files :(

Regards ;)

Hello,

To Yohan,

There's no capital letters at the beginning of the sentences, because one of the translators omitted them. The number of the sentences is very important, so I choose to conserve the Minuscules.
If somebody has time to continue the translation, I'm OK ;-)
To translate the file, you have to use PoEdit, which exists for Mac too.

I just downloaded it thanks for the link Yellow Swordfish.

Now I open the .po file it's a bit more clear ^^

To Lise:

Je suis quand même plus à l'aise en Français :) j'ai commencé à corriger certaines choses et mettre quelques majuscules (pas sur les longues phrases bien sûr). Il y a quelques fautes de pluriel si j'ai bien vu.

Par contre la partie avec le fichier .mo me parait obscure encore, il est lié au fichier .po mais je ne sais pas si je dois l'éditer ou si je n'ai rien à faire de particulier avec.

Pour la version 5 si il y a encore d'autres choses à traduire je veux bien aider aussi :)

The .mo file is automatically realised, when you save the .po file.
I'm very busy, if you have time to translate the version 5, I can validate it, if you and Andy are OK.

Haaa right! Thanks that's quicker this way Laugh

And what happen if you edit the .po file directly on your FTP with the .mo file already there? Does PoEdit edit it automatically ?

I have some free time and I can help yes, but the complete translation would be long and hard if I have to do it alone! I don't even know how to proceed for finding the version 5 files Embarassed

You have to reload the .mo file, I suppose !

You have not to do the complete translation, only the new or modified chains have to be translated.

The explanations for the translation are here :

Lise – we would be most pleased to have you as the French validator. If you decide to take on that role then please just register on the new site and let me have your username and I can upgrade your account to validator.

Hope all is well with you

Regards

Andy

Thanks Lise very much.

I have updated the account to make you a validator.

I will have to look into the password question. GlotPress is very basic but the main reasons we adopted it is because (a) unlike most of the collaborative options available it is the only one that can generate an .mo file and (b) now it has been adopted by the WP dev team they have promised that it will be worked on and extended and improved.

So fingers crossed it will get better! And more attractive as well wouldn't hurt!
